We've had to fix our Miele dishwasher three times in two years for a stiff circulation pump. Basically, our dishwasher stops working if we haven't used it for a while (i.e., gone on vacation, etc.). The problem occurs when the water in the bottom of the dishwasher dries up, so that the circulation pump sticks and the wash cycle won't start. The solution is to use a small customized tool called a "hook spanner" (Miele part no. 5 58* 740) to give the circulation pump a manual push and the problem is solved.

It seems like such a simple fix, but it? took many long and frustrating phone calls with Miele customer service before they finally agreed to send us the hook spanner required to fix the problem ourselves. Each time we've called for the past two years, Miele has always insisted upon sending their own technician (with a hook spanner) for $200/visit or have told us to go find our own wrench if we want to to do it ourselves.

Apparently, Miele dishwashers only work well if you use them at least every other day so the water doesn't dry up -- according to Miele customer service. THIS IS NOT IN THE MANUAL. They only tell you this after your dishwasher breaks down and after they want to charge you $200 (+parts) for a service call. Even their own show room sales staff told us that you only have to use Miele dishwashers every couple of months to keep them running smoothly.

We've NEVER had this kind of problem with any other brand of dishwasher. And when asking around, we've found that we're not the only ones who have problems with Miele. Seriously, if your product is designed to break down because your customers don't use it everyday, then there's something seriously wrong with the design of your product. Especially when something this important is not specified in the manual. We'll never buy another Miele.

We have also had problems with our 6-year old Miele dishwasher re-circulation pump. We paid $170 the first time for a technician to come and free it but then when it went wrong a second time the technician recommended installing a new pump.

After enquiring, the quote for this was over $700.

So we bought a cheap machine for less on the basis that we could replace that a few times for the cost of a Miele! The cheap machine works just fine, and I have never had problems with a cheap machine in my life previously.
